I was a new Assistant and was trying to develop a relationship with Willie, the newest L’Arche core person. I had just about come to the painful conclusion that we had absolutely nothing in common. Then one day we connected as we walked home from McDonald’s. Willie noticed a squirrel jumping from tree to tree, and stopped to watch. I began to watch, too, and found myself captivated by the squirrel. I thought for sure it would fall. Willie assured me that he had watched thousands of squirrels and few had ever fallen. For about ten minutes we watched that crazy squirrel and laughed together. Spending time together got easier from that time on.
