Becoming an Assistant
Assistants are an integral part of any L'Arche community. They carry the responsibility of caring for the health and well-being of the core people (people with intellectual disabilities) and of operating the homes. An assistant's role includes:
Assistants are asked to make an initial one-year commitment to L'Arche. Assistants who are eligible can also receive an AmeriCorps education grant of almost $10,000 over the course of two years.
L'Arche Greater Washington, D.C., welcomes three kinds of assistants: member assistants, employee assistants, and awake-overnight employees.
- teaching new life skills, such as cooking, shopping, and using public transit;
- accompanying core people to medical appointments or community activities;
- helping, if needed, with bathing, dressing, and eating;
- sharing in household chores, including cleaning, shopping, cooking, and driving;
- working with the home-life coordinator as part of the household team of assistants;
- participating in and contributing to L'Arche meetings and trainings; and
- laughing, hoping, and dreaming with the core people.
